Customer Review: Better to avoid XD if your camera gives you the option

In a moment of weakness I bought a Fuji S5200 camera that can only use XD memory (even though I had heard horror stories about corrupted XD cards etc.)
The very first time I tried to download my pictures using one of the above `type M' high capacity cards, I lost every single image on the card.
To put this in context, I have owned more than a dozen digital cameras over the years, and have NEVER lost a single image on a Compact Flash or SD memory card, but have had 512 Megs to a full Gigabyte of images irrecoverably disappear several times on XD cards.
I had seen `picture recovery' software before, but UNTIL I got this Fuji camera with XD memory, I wondered why folks would ever need such a thing.
Of course there are some folks who feel some kind of evangelical need to promote XD as the ultimate in digital image storage after choosing a camera that uses this worthless format (It must be the best! I picked it after all, didn't I?).
XD is definitely best, if you definition of best includes:
- Very high rates of corrupted and lost images
- Short life (one XD card I purchased only worked about three times then died and this seems to have happened to others as well)
- Double or triple the cost (and this is getting even worse as SD memory is heavily discounted due to competition).
Of course XD cards are so cute and tiny and that counts for something right? Sorry, mini/micro SD cards are MUCH smaller, won't TRASH your images, and come with this snazzy adaptor that let's you also use them in full sized SD devices as well.
To make matters worse, XD seems to be going the way of BETA video tapes (with even the idiots who thought it up abandoning it).
If you are fortunate enough to have a camera that can also use an alternative memory format like CF or SD (as is the case with some Fuji and Olympus offerings), then I HIGHLY recommend that you used them and stay away from XD, and if you are considering a new camera purchase, I would warn you NOT to purchase a model which can only use XD memory (I certainly never will).
For the benefit of those that ARE stuck with XD, here are some tips:
- Go slow when changing to another capacity card (256k to 512k or 1G)
- Go slow when changing to another vendor (Fuji vs. Olympus)
- Go slow when changing to another type (M vs. H)
- Go slow when trying to use external card readers (probably better NOT to use them at all)
With the definition of "Go slow" above being that you should not shoot any pictures that you actually care about until you have done enough test shots to make sure you are not going to loose everything you shoot (because every one of the above issues can cause trouble).
I have never given a "1" rating to ANYTHING on Amazon, but the only reason XD doesn't rate a ZERO is Amazon's ratings do not go that low.
The lame justification used by the Fuji/Olympus cartel for monopolizing the manufacture of these cards was so they could insure compatibility and control quality, but the reality is that it was just about ripping off consumers with much higher prices (because, as far as I can tell, XD cards seem to have MORE compatibility issues and other `lost picture' problems than ANY other type of memory storage card).
As much as I despise frivolous litigation, I would love to see a bunch of XD card users who have lost all their irreplaceable vacation photo's (from say, Europe or Africa), get together in a class action and SUE Fuji (NOT just for the cost of a replacement card, but for the full cost of their vacations).
