Customer Review: Fuji XP 10 is OK for the money and taking simple pictures

See my extensive comments under the 5 star gadgester review about this product. i just came back from 10 days in hawaii. my canon LCD screen went south and i picked this camera primarily for using underwater as an interim camera.
my trip was primarily for marlin fishing then doing some snorkling and visiting volcano national park.
some of the reviews said the camera leaked under water. i inspected the cover over the memory card and battery and could not see how it provides a good waterproof seal. so i did not use the camera for under water shots. i did not want to mess up my camera before taking the marlin fishing and volcano pictures. so i bought a fuii $9 27 exposure throw away camera that worked great. no videos but at least i have underwater pics.
this is my brief summary.
1. for regular shots the pictures turned out good. the camera has trouble with contrasty pictures where you have both shade and bright sun. this is where cheaper cameras fall down. the higher pixel count does not mean better quality. it is all in the size of the CCD itself. cramming millions of pixels into a small CCD makes for low quality pictures when you try and resolve detail in high contrast situations. so keep your pictures so there is not a lot of shade and bright light in the picture and you will be fine.
2. i had no problems with battery life but the battery indicator is not accurate. you can show a 3/4 charge and a few minutes later the battery is gone. the indicator did not show 1/2 or 1/4 charge so be careful and take a spare battery.
3. my biggest complaint was seeing the LCD in sunlight. virtually impossible unless you somehow shaded the screen.
4. the lens is located in the upper left hand corner of the camera as you hold the camera. it is very easy to get your finger partially blocking the lens since the lens is right where you would hold the camera with your left hand.
not sure why the lens was located there. with the difficulty in seeing the picture with the LCD i had several pictures/vidoes showing one of my figures. so be careful where you put the fingers on your left hand.
4. sony and panasonic have a video standard called AVCHD that allows recording videos for 30 minutes or more. this fujii camera uses the older motion MPEG standard which has a 2GB file limitation so you can shoot for about 10-12 minutes.
5. for the money the camera is good. i gave it a 3 rating because i did not like the design of the cover for the memory and battery, battery charge indicator not being accurate and problems seeing the LCD. it also did not seem very well built from other reviews with paint peeling off after a couple of hours in the water. picture quality was good for non contrasty pictures.
A BIGGER PROBLEM WITH THESE HD CAMERAS IS HOW ARE YOU GOING TO BURN YOUR VIDEOS TO DVD. THERE IS NOT A SIMPLE SOLUTION. I AM DOING RESEARCH RIGHT NOW. YOU CALL FUJII TECH SUPPORT AND THEY SAY THEY CANNOT HELP YOU WITH ANY QUESTIONS HOW TO BURN A DVD FROM THEIR CAMERA AS THAT FUNCTION IS LICENSED TO OTHERS. VERY LAME AS THEY GIVE YOU A FEATURE AND THEN DO NOT TELL YOU HOW TO FULLY USE IT.
ONCE YOU FIGURE IT OUT YOU WILL NEED AN HD OR BLUE RAY PLAYER TO PLAY YOUR HD DVD'S AND AN HD TV SET. YOU CAN RUN A CABLE FROM YOUR CAMERA TO THE HD TV BUT YOU ARE STUCK WITH HAVING TO BUY MORE MEMORY IF YOU WANT TO PRESERVE YOUR VIDEO.
THE AVCHD LITE FORMAT LOOKS LIKE A BETTER OPTION REGARDING EASE OF BURNING TO A DVD BUT THAT IS LICENSED BY SONY AND PANASONIC.
